The event, which will be celebrated at Goddard Schools nationwide, is to be held on Saturday, February 11th from 10 am to noon.

What is bullying?

Goddard School parents sometimes ask us this question and here are some insights to the topic of bullying.

The majority of American parents have become increasingly worried about the probability that their children will be confronted by bullies, and they’ve begun to ask for solutions. Here are some statistics on bullying. A recent Harris poll found that two-thirds of parents worry that their preschool/kindergarten children will be bullied. Though bullying has been a part of human experience since before recorded time, our shrinking world increases its presence and possibly forecasts an increased toll to our children. My grandparents believed, ‘what didn’t break you, made you stronger’; today, we’re a little more worried about the ‘breaking’ coming before the ‘strengthening’ – especially among our youngsters.

Bullying is a problematic, but not inevitable, part of human interpersonal business. It differs from the usual scrapes and chafes of everyday life because of its intentional nature. Toddlers and preschoolers are busy working on their unique sense of self, using newly learned personal pronouns to announce what’s theirs. This includes their toys, body parts and random objects that catch the eye (see Toddler Property Laws in my book, ‘Me, Myself and I’). So, when someone unknowingly violates one of these property laws, ‘No, mine!’ gets screamed and a brief, small (in the scheme of things) social encounter of an aggressive nature may occur. A parent or teacher usually handles such incidents with some helpful words and – it’s on with the day.

Bullying, however, is an intentional, aggressive act – social or physical – with the sole aim of intimidating a peer. Such acts happen daily on the margins of adult supervision and as such are witnessed by most peers. Most of the children we know have either been a perpetrator, victim or bystander – since as long as they can remember, these three jobs may even be a continuum.

We are born with a drive to master the world around us, and a portion of selfishness and aggression seems to be part of everyone’s tool kit. Parents begin early by helping their children get the ‘dosage’ right, helped along by culture and society’s expectations. One of nature’s partners in this process is the innate capacity for empathy which shows up, developmentally, in the middle of the second year of life. Remember the toddler offering (temporarily) his binky or blankie to a sad friend? How do we get from there to Michele Anthony’s descriptions of the painful social bullying in her Little Girls Can Be Mean: Four Steps to Bully-proof Girls in the Early Grades - in just a few short years? Well, we could go on forever, but in this article’s worth of advice, I know parents are pretty sure they’d like to strengthen their child’s defenses against distressing stuff.

Supporting an early drive to care for one another is the winning strategy. The brain –and its hormonal partners- treat acts of kindness and caring with the same special care as it does warm human relationships. The ‘relationship hormone’, oxytocin, increases whenever such acts are performed, improving our capacity to regulate our emotions and get our aggression and selfishness under control. If parents can ‘catch’ their children in small acts of kindness and add a few words to explain why this feels good – to them and to the child, and why they value it so highly – resilience to bullying when parents are not around is under construction.

Speaking up about how we treat each other is an especially powerful tool in anti-bullying strategies because it has the power of majority. Bullying feeds on our silence. Let’s help each other and our children find our voices.

It provides many great ideas for positive communications with your child, such as the tips below.

Children should begin to learn to respect limits from a young age. Most boundaries for children are set for health and safety reasons and are a very important and necessary developmental tool. Children are corrected every day, which can lead them to simply “tune out” any perceived negativity or become uncooperative. Regardless of their age, most people respond better to positively communicated direction. This is especially true for children. For example, “Grandma is worried about us getting stains on her couch. Let’s enjoy our snack in her kitchen instead,” will generate more cooperation than “No food or drinks in Grandma’s living room.”

Try telling your child what they can do instead of what they can’t. Practice the positive alternatives below to avoid overusing the word “no” while maintaining reasonable limits.

• “Maybe later” can work to delay a request such as snacks or sweets before mealtime.

• “Not today” communicates that the timing is wrong but leaves the possibility open.

• “When we’ve done (this), then we can do (that).” This method is good for transition times and to help toddlers establish event routines. For example, “When all of your toys are put away, we can go play at the park.”

• “I’ll think about it” replaces an automatic “no” by allowing yourself the time to think about your determination. Parents tend to make better decisions when they take the time to think about the request and their response.

• “Sure, did you bring your allowance?” This technique allows you to communicate that they may have the requested item if they can pay for it themselves.

• “Yes (with qualifier).” This strategy grants conditional permission. For example, “Yes, you may play the game after we eat dinner.”

Cedar Park Resident Earns Top Honor
Butch Aggen named to Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 1/3/12 — George “Butch” Aggen, Cedar Park resident and owner of the Goddard School of Cedar Park, has been named to the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame which is located in the Pittsburgh area.

Aggen was a four-year starter (1973 – 1976) and an Associated Press All-American linebacker for Indiana University of Pennsylvania (NCAA division II). He still holds the record for most career tackles (429) at IUP and was inducted into the university’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

“I’m proud to be recognized by the selection committee,” said Butch Aggen. “I give credit to the wonderful coaches and teammates that I had the opportunity to be associated with during those years.” He will be inducted in a ceremony to be held in April, 2013 in the Pittsburgh area.

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 12/12/11 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park was the host to a Holiday Kwanzaa cultural event on 12/12/11 from 10 am to 11 am.

Cedar Park Goddard School Tries to Break ‘Simon Says’ Record

Cedar Park, TX (Grassroots Newswire) September 26, 2011 – Goddard Schools across the country, such as the Goddard School in Cedar Park, participated in an effort to break the Guinness Record for the world’s largest multi-venue game of ‘Simon Says.’

In Cedar Park, the 48 participants included students in Goddard’s kindergarten and PreKindergarten classes. Butch Aggen, owner of Goddard School, played the role of Simon. Geraldine Smythe, owner of Abrakadoodle, served as celebrity witness for compliance with Guinness Record requirements. Other observers included parents and school faculty.

The rules stated that all participants must be able to play unassisted and Simon must make intermixing calls — with and without the instruction of Simon Says — every five seconds. The game ended with kindergarten student Alaina Marsh winning. The current record for the largest multi-venue game of Simon Says involved 12,215 participants at the Utah Summer Games Opening Ceremony on June 14, 2007. The Goddard School system is in the process of determining the total number of participants nationwide and will submit the results to Guinness..

Raising a Generous Child

At Goddard School of Cedar Park, many parents enroll in our 2 or 3 day part time program specifically for the purpose of positive socialization for their child. Our curriculum incorporates many opportunities for a child to learn cooperation and sharing. Here are some ideas on how to raise a generous child.

The ability to give unselfishly to others is not a quality people are born with. Experiences we have and the values we are taught form the basis for the choices we tend to make in our lives regarding generosity. Similar to other behavioral and physical growth stages, researchers have found that children’s moral behaviors also evolve in developmental phases.

Usually young children up to about five years of age are a bit self-absorbed and fairly unaware of other’s feelings. They tend to believe that they should have whatever it is that they want. At around four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half years of age, children like to please adults and are more willing to be coached.

As a child’s moral reasoning develops, parents can model generous behaviors and discuss the importance of generosity. Children will more easily grasp a value such as generosity if they have early and frequent real-life exposure to it. Setting examples and reinforcing good manners at this stage will go a long way.

Don’t despair if your little one seems quite selfish. It’s almost as nature intends for us to learn to love ourselves before we can love others. Remember that a child’s behavior and train of thought will go through various transitions and eventually even a self-centered preschooler can become a warm and generous individual.

By giving your children many opportunities to experience the wonderful feeling of giving to others, they will likely grow up to be generous adults.

Positive Alternatives to “No”

Balancing Breakfast: Quick, Creative Tips for Busy Families

At The Goddard School of Cedar Park, we’ve parents wondering about the best way to be sure their child eats nutritionally sound meals. Here are some tips for breakfast.

Though we’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day—especially for children—it is often a casualty of morning mayhem. Start your child’s day off with a nutritious and energy-boosting breakfast. Children (grown-ups too!) who consistently eat balanced breakfasts have more energy, better diets, perform better and are less likely to be anxious or irritable. We’re busy with our daily routines and sometimes it seems difficult to find healthy foods that children enjoy. Serving up a balanced breakfast is actually easier than it seems!

Trying these nutritious breakfast tips and easy ideas can help make mornings cheerier, keep tummies fuller and help provide lots of energy.

Cutting foods into fun shapes with seasonal, animal or other cookie cutters is a quick way to turn a boring breakfast into a tummy pleaser.
Turn an ordinary bowl of whole grain cereal with milk into something more exciting by topping with sliced star fruit, pomegranate seeds or other unexpected bright fruit.
Scramble egg whites with low-fat cheese and diced, colorful veggies. Add tomatoes for eyes, a baby carrot for a nose, a slice of turkey bacon for the mouth—even broccoli for hair!

Whip up a mixed fruit smoothie using crushed ice, yogurt, fresh or canned fruit and add brightly colored frozen juice concentrate. Garnish with an orange wedge. This can be made the night before to save time in the morning.
Toast a whole grain toaster waffle, top with low-fat berry cream cheese. Create a flower or other fun design on top using sliced strawberries and peaches.
Spread peanut butter in a whole wheat tortilla. Add raisins and banana slices, roll up tightly and slice to create yummy pinwheels.
Serve up a ‘breakfast sundae’ by layering low-fat yogurt with fresh fruit and crunchy granola cereal in a fun, see-through container. Top with a cherry or grape and use colored cereal bits for “sprinkles.”

Create a ‘breakfast pizza’ using a whole wheat English muffin. Spread the English muffin with low-fat flavored cream cheese and top with diced fruits or veggies.

Age Appropriate Fitness

At The Goddard School of Cedar Park, fitness is an important part of our curriculum. Here are some pointers on fitness for young children.

Focusing your child’s physical fitness on fun activities will increase your child’s ability to move with confidence and competence. Exercise increases overall metabolism, builds a healthy heart and lungs, strong bones and muscles, and improves coordination, balance, posture and flexibility.

Infant
Encourage babies to explore activities that allow for reaching, rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling themselves up and walking. ‘Tummy Time’ is the perfect opportunity for babies to practice lifting their heads and develop strong muscles. Placing toys just out of reach encourages babies to reach for the toys, assisting in physical development.

First Steps/Toddler
Support young toddlers mastery of walking by allowing them to be active! Play with them as they learn to run, hop, dance and throw. Have them chase bubbles or invent a silly walk – play becomes exercise. Remember to always provide encouragement to toddlers as they build self-confidence.

Preschool +
Preschoolers need plenty of time and space to run around and play. Taking your child to a playground or park is a great way to release energy and exercise! Encourage creative dancing and riding scooters and tricycles. Play ‘Statues’ by playing up-tempo music. Have your child move while the music is playing and freeze into a statue when you pause it. Play outside with your child and teach hand-eye coordination by showing the basics of throwing, catching and kicking a large, soft ball.

Goddard School Students are Prepared for Success!

The Goddard School® has been at the forefront of early childhood education for the past 25 years, and the results of a recent assessment prove this to be true. Results from the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA), an early childhood assessment, show that Goddard School students consistently outperform the general population of CPAA users by a significant margin and met or exceeded grade level expectations at a higher rate than the general population in every concept assessed on the CPAA.

Goddard School assessments for the 2010-2011 school year compared with 45,000+ Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten public school students and over 135,000 assessments

CPAA is an early childhood assessment system that helps teachers focus classroom instruction to achieve the greatest learning gains for each child. CPAA grew out of decades of research at Columbia University and has been successfully used by 39 state agencies, and in school districts and schools nationwide. Specifically designed to be stress-free and developmentally appropriate for learners, this program assesses each student’s level of comfort with major early literacy and mathematics concepts. Each assessment lasts approximately 15-20 minutes and is performed three times a year.

The Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA) is a computer-adaptive early childhood assessment system that helps teachers focus classroom instruction to achieve the greatest learning gains for each child. The CPAA grew out of decades of research at Columbia University and has been used by schools, districts and state agencies nationwide. Stress-free and developmentally appropriate for young learners, this program assesses each student’s level of comfort with major early literacy and mathematics concepts. Children’s Progress’ diagnostic assessments, web-based reports and instructional recommendations are designed to support the ongoing formative assessment process.

Pre-K Highlights
Goddard School Pre-Kindergarteners showed exceptional performance in Reading and Numeracy.

Compared to the whole population of Pre-Kindergarten students using the CPAA:

64% more Goddard School students scored Above Expectation in Numeracy
60% more scored Above Expectation in Reading
56% more scored Above Expectation in Patterns

Kindergarten Highlights
The proportion of Goddard School students outperforming the general population was even more striking in Kindergarten. In some cases, the percentage of Goddard students exceeding expectations was double that of the general population.

Simon Says: An Exercise for Academic Excellence

A recent study published in the Psychological Assessment journal found that preschool children who regularly participate in “Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders” tasks like Simon Says may do better academically. According to Megan McClelland, an associate professor of human development and family science at Oregon State University, games like Simon Says can help children improve their self-regulation skills through listening carefully and following directions. For most parents, children’s play is just that and no more–diversion or entertainment. But to think that play matters only in so far as it brings pleasure is to miss the forest through the trees. Play is ultimately about learning, and all play is educational play.

The reason that children love to play is precisely because it does mean something. They come to it very naturally from the beginning months of their life. In fact, a vast amount of a child’s total learning comes through play, both alone, and with you. What are some of the things children learn through play?

Children learn what is soft and hard, cold and warm, scratchy or smooth, as they touch and manipulate everything within reach.
Children learn what is quiet and loud, pleasing and raucous, as they scream and coo, or rub and smash.
Children learn what works and doesn’t work, as they pull and push, fit, stack, and destroy.

One of the most important things they learn through all this tireless trial and error is how to connect events, feelings, thoughts and learning together into experience and to file it away in their brains under certain symbols. This all starts to happen well before they have command of spoken language. Simply stated, through play, children learn to symbolize their experience.

The enrichment of learning by play, and vice versa, also holds for the quality of the child’s relationships. Research tells us that children who are securely attached to their caregivers are better players and hence, by our reasoning, better learners. Children who have received consistent high-quality care, both emotionally and physically, who are talked to and listened to, and who have observed those around them involved in respectful interpersonal relationships carry their security–their self-confidence and feelings of self-worth–into play with others.

Back to School, Part 2

This is part 2 of “Back-to-school season.” If you have answered “no” to most of these questions in the previous blog post, it might be time to implement more routine chores. Aggen, owner of Goddard School of Cedar Park, suggests the following ideas that could help parents save time and institute organizational skills for their kids:
• Be sure to discuss the highlights and events that happened at school with your child each day.
• Help your child prepare for school the night before, including assisting your child in selecting clothes to wear for school. After a while, he or she will be able to do this without your assistance.
• Designate a time each night that your child should go to sleep. Children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night, depending on their age.
• Choose an area in the home, such as by the front door, to store your child’s school bag and any supplies he or she may need for school (e.g., art projects, thank-you notes/gifts for teachers).
• Have a daily to-do list posted in an area your child will see each day.

Back-to-school season is here and Cedar Park-area children are probably getting excited about shopping for new clothes and being able to see their school friends. And, while education is an essential part of growing up, Butch Aggen of The Goddard School located in Cedar Park, says other factors like waking up earlier in the morning, brushing teeth and packing a school lunch are also important, as it helps develop an organized lifestyle and further a child’s growth.

Routine establishes many aspects of healthy living, good habits and good behavior that even the slightest structure can make a huge difference in a child’s day-to-day life, Aggen said. Aggen suggests parents, with young children, ask themselves the following questions:

Do you post a list of nighttime and morning to-dos on your child’s bedroom door or on the kitchen refrigerator as daily guidelines for your children?
Do you read a bedtime story to your child each night?
Do you have a designated area in your child’s room or elsewhere in the home for your child to store his or her coat and school book bag?
Does your child have a bedtime on school nights and on weekends?

Cedar Park Area Families Join National Celebration of the Power of Play, Fitness & Nutrition

WHAT: The Goddard School® Block Party

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park will host The Goddard School Block Party. We are continuing our campaign regarding the importance of play and its scientifically-based role in developing critical life skills and career opportunities for 21st century learners. This year our Block Party will also highlight the importance of fitness and nutrition in our children’s lives. In addition to developing healthy minds, it is at the core of The Goddard School FLEX™ Learning Program to instill lifelong healthy lifestyle habits. As a leader in the industry, Goddard Schools are in the process of applying to the “Let’s Move” childcare initiative. In June 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the childcare phase of “Let’s Move” by encouraging childcare facilities to improve healthy eating and increase physical activity.

Owner receives Leadership Cedar Park Recognition

Goddard Schools® in central Texas participate in Round Rock Express Military Appreciation Night

Cedar Park School Completes Rigorous NAC Accreditation Process

Forty Thousand Children “Stepped Up” for the Environment

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 3/30/11 – On Friday, March 25, more than 100 children from The Goddard School located in Cedar Park turned off the lights and stepped up for the environment. As part of World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour 2011, students participated in a number of engaging activities to spread the message that by working together, each one of them can make a positive impact toward a sustainable future. More than 45,000 Goddard children across the country joined in.

Throughout the week, children and teachers participated in a variety of fun activities, games and lessons designed to increase their awareness of how energy use and daily activities can affect the future of the planet and how they can conserve energy in their daily lives. Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 12/21/10 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park collected toys and assisted with the “Blue Santa” Toy Drive throughout December.

During Fall Fest, 11 am to 2 pm

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 10/25/10 — The Goddard School of Cedar Park has partnered with Blood Center of Central Texas to host a Community Blood Drive on Saturday, October 30th between the hours of 11:00am and 2:00pm. Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 9/7/10 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park participated in the LEEF “Grant Patrol” on 9/3/10. Maria Aggen, owner of The Goddard School, along with other LEEF board members, delivered grant awards to teachers of the Leander Independent School District.

The Goddard School will be funding a grant for LEEF (Leander Educational Excellence Foundation) to assist Reagan Elementary in its efforts to promote literacy among Autistic students. “Read with Me” utilizes new technologies and creative teaching techniques to enhance the development of reading among children with autism.

Cedar Park, TX (Grassroots Newswire) 9/2/10 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park was the host to Free Yoga Day on 9/1/10 from 3 PM to 5 PM.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park opened in November 2007 and is owned and operated by Maria Aggen. The school accommodates 174, ages six weeks to 10 years.

Although Austin’s “Free Yoga Day” is scheduled for Sunday, September 5th, Goddard School of Cedar Park celebrated “Free Yoga” early at the school on Monday. A local yoga instructor lead children as young as 3 years and as old as 10 years through yoga exercise in the onsite gym.

Austin, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 5/19/10 — The Goddard Schools located at in greater Austin will be the host to Big Brother Big Sister of Central Texas at Dell Diamond on Sunday, May 23 from noon to 6 p.m.

Austin Radio Control Association Visits The Goddard School® located in Cedar Park

Forty Thousand Children “Stepped Up” for the Environment

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 3/29/10 – On Friday, March 26, more than 150 children from The Goddard School located in Cedar Park turned off the lights and stepped up for the environment. As part of World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour 2010, students participated in a number of engaging activities to spread the message that by working together, each one of them can make a positive impact toward a sustainable future. More than 40,000 Goddard children across the country joined in.

Throughout the week, children and teachers participated in a variety of fun activities, games and lessons designed to increase their awareness of how energy use and daily activities can affect the future of the planet and how they can conserve energy in their daily lives. An “Earth Hour” banner, made by the children out of recycled materials, was presented to Mitch Fuller, councilman for the City of Cedar Park and John Houser, District Manager for Pedernales Electric. The children also participated in a parade dressed in costumes made of recycled materials and visited PEC’s eco-friendly bucket truck. Susan Meredith, author of Beyond the Light Bulbs, also conducted environmental hands-on experiments with children to teach them about energy conservation.

To mark this global call to action on climate change, on Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. hundreds of millions of people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park, will join 360 Goddard Schools nationwide to help spread the message that by working together, each one of them can make a positive impact toward a sustainable future. The Goddard School located in Cedar Park will launch an entire week of activities and lesson plans beginning March 22nd leading up to a big celebration for the Stepping Up for the Environment event on March 26th at 10 a.m., a day before the global event.

On March 26th, The Goddard School located in Cedar Park will celebrate Earth Hour with the Stepping Up for the Environment event. The School will host a visit by the Pedernales Electric eco-friendly utility truck, participate in a celebration parade in costumes made of recycled materials and present an earth hour banner to leaders of the Cedar Park community, including Mitch Fuller, councilman for the City of Cedar Park. Then, at 10 a.m., schools will turn off any non-essential lighting for one hour.

The Goddard School® located in Cedar Park participated in Hockey for Haiti

Cedar Park, TX (Grassroots Newswire) 3/1/2010 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park and four other Goddard Schools were the host to Hockey for Haiti on 2/28/10 during the Texas Stars hockey game.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park opened in February, 2010 and is owned and operated by Maria and Butch Aggen. The school accommodates 174, ages six weeks to 10 years.

Throughout the month of February, all five Goddard Schools in the Austin area conducted activities such as silent auctions, bake sales and penny jar collections to raise donations for the Red Cross – Haiti Relief effort. Austin Diamond District donated a pearl necklace to encourage donations and family participation in the Goddard School “Hockey for Haiti” game at the Cedar Park Events Center. It was Goddard School family night and the necklace was presented to a parent, Junita Sullivan , who participated in the fundraising efforts. Donations continue to come in and its expected that close to $2000 will be raised.

Cedar Park, TX (Grassroots Newswire) 12/22/09 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park was the host to the Children’s Literacy Festival on November 21st, 2009 and presented a check to LEEF (Leander Educational Excellence Foundation) Chairman Brian Haulotte for its children’s literacy program this past week.

The festival included local businesses providing child/family services and involved local elementary schools in gathering donations of gently used books. “The book donations exceeded our expectations – over 3000 books for children were donated. Parent event hosted by The Goddard School

Cedar Park, TX (Grassroots Newswire) 9/15/09 — Parents now have the chance to head back to school and experience what it’s like during a typical day at preschool.

The Goddard School is holding “A Day in the Life of a Preschooler” where from nap time to snack time, to sing-a-longs and creative art projects, parents will get a lesson what it’s like to really be a preschooler.

“A Day in the Life of a Preschooler offers parents a first-hand look at what their child does every day,” says Maria Aggen, owner of school. “This event will showcase how activities for social, physical, and creative development can be woven into a day of learning and fun.”

Throughout the evening, parents will get to know their classmates, participate in a number of group activities from Spanish to Yoga, and even wind down for nap time. Aqua-tots & Chick-fil-A Cow Visits The Goddard School located in Cedar Park

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 6/12/2009 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Parkwill be the host to Water Safety Tips on 6/15/09 from 10 AM to 11 AM.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park opened in June 2009 and is owned and operated by Maria Aggen. The school accommodates 176 children, ages six weeks to 5.

Students will learn water safety tips and practice several water safety skills Monday June 15 between 10 and 11 a.m. With our guests: Aqua-Tots Swim Schools, the leading provider of childrens swim lessons in Austin, and the Chick-fil-A Cow! Children will participate in the reading of a water safety book, learn a number of tips for water safety, and work with Aqua-Tots and the Cow to practice what to do in case of emergency in and around the water.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park had a Graduation!
$10,000 college scholarship announced

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 6/1/09 — The Goddard School, the premier preschool for children from six weeks to six years old, located at 1905 El Salido Parkway hosted a graduation on 5/28/09 at 6:30 PM at Lakeline Oaks Retirement Community.

PreK children participated in a ceremony which included various class presentations including Spanish songs performed by the children and a diploma to celebrate this milestone. The special event also featured a reception afterwards.

Details were also announced about the annual $10,000 Anthony A. Martino Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is given to one Goddard School alumnus each year and helps to finance the tuition of the college or university of the student’s choice. Applicants must be in their junior or senior years of high school and must use the scholarship to attend an accredited college or university. “The Anthony A. Martino Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to a graduate from The Goddard School who currently demonstrates excellent work ethic and perserverance at their high school,” said Maria Aggen, owner of The Goddard School. “We know we will have many alumni that will fit that category and we are excited about the prestigious award.”

The Anthony A. Martino Memorial Scholarship is named in memory of the founder of The Goddard School, an entrepreneur who started several other well-known franchise companies including Aamco Transmissions, Inc. and Maaco Auto Painting and Bodyworks, Inc. According to Schumacher, Martino was a successful businessperson who worked his way up from humble beginnings to achieve success.

The Goddard School delivers book donations for LISD PreK
Helps address literacy issues in disadvantaged homes

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 5/7/2009 — The Goddard Schools located in Cedar Park and Leander assisted LEEF (Leander Educational Excellence Foundation) in the distribution of books to LISD PreK students on the week of May 4, 2009.

“We were delighted to help in this important effort to get childrens books into the homes where they may not have any,” says Aggen. “Addressing illiteracy early in life is of critical importance to every childs future success. We delivered books that have been collected by LEEF via our school bus to 11 local elementary schools. The schools then distributed the books to children registered in the public PreK program.”

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park participated in St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program, raises $1300

Cedar Park, Texas (Grassroots Newswire) 5/4/2009 — The Goddard School located at 1905 El Salido Parkway in Cedar Park was the host to St. Jude Trike-A-Thon on 3/28/2009 from 10 AM to noon.

The Goddard School located in Cedar Park opened in March 2009 and is owned and operated by Maria Aggen. The school accommodates 176, ages six weeks to five.

The Goddard School, partnering with the Hill Country Optimist Club, participated in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program and raised over $1300 to benefit St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, the premier center for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases. More than 150 children participated in this fun, week-long program while learning riding-toy safety lessons and raising money for St. Jude. The week ended with the participants bringing their trikes and riding-toys to school and practicing the rules they learned. The Cedar Park community sponsored participants by pledging an amount-per-lap the children rode or a one-time donation. Its fun to see the children get excited about learning, said Maria Aggen, coordinator of the event. They love the interactive lessons that feature characters, Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny. The St. Jude Trike-A-Thon also gives me the opportunity to teach the children valuable safety lessons while also helping children who are battling cancer. Upon completion of the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon the children won prizes ranging from Trike-A-Thon T-shirts to Bikewell Bear or Pedals the Bunny plush toys.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no television before age two. Children are strongly affected by television and parents should consider the way their child is exposed to its powerful influences. However, if/when your child watches television, watch with them. Children may need your help to decipher the barrage of messages, and only you know when they have had enough.

Keeping your Child Healthy

Nutrition and exercise are important to your child’s overall health. Proper nutrition and participation in physical activities can prevent many medical problems and ensure your child is growing to his/her full potential.

Encourage your child to eat a variety of foods to help them get the nutrients they need from every food group. By offering your child a variety of foods, they are more likely to try new foods and to like more foods. Children learn from their parents, so it is no surprise that they are likely to mimic your food choices and physical activities. If they see you enjoying fruits, vegetables, whole grains as well as physical activities, your children are more likely enjoy them as well. Be a good role model for developing good health, physical skills and self-esteem by eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise.

Age Appropriate Fitness

Focusing your childs physical fitness on fun activities will increase your childs ability to move with confidence and competence. Exercise increases overall metabolism, builds a healthy heart and lungs, strong bones and muscles, and improves coordination, balance, posture and flexibility.

Infant
Encourage babies to explore activities that allow for reaching, rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling themselves up and walking. Tummy Time is the perfect opportunity for babies to practice lifting their heads and develop strong muscles. Placing toys just out of reach encourages babies to reach for the toys, assisting in physical development.

First Steps/Toddler
Support young toddlers mastery of walking by allowing them to be active! Play with them as they learn to run, hop, dance and throw. Have them chase bubbles or invent a silly walk – play becomes exercise. Remember to always provide encouragement to toddlers as they build self-confidence.

Preschool +
Preschoolers need plenty of time and space to run around and play. Taking your child to a playground or park is a great way to release energy and exercise! Encourage creative dancing and riding scooters and tricycles. Play Statues by playing up-tempo music. Have your child move while the music is playing and freeze into a statue when you pause it. Play outside with your child and teach hand-eye coordination by showing the basics of throwing, catching and kicking a large, soft ball.
