Tips for a safe and happy Halloween

Halloween is a happy, fun-filled holiday for families and provides inspiration for children to express creativity and manners!  Parents balance this enthusiastic learning opportunity, however, by providing safe and dependable environments – both at home and “on the trick-or-treat road.” 

Pumpkin Decorating

Encourage your children to participate in pumpkin decorating activities.

  • A child-friendly and safe alternative to pumpkin carving is to provide children with markers or paint to decorate their pumpkins.
  • Use child-drawn outlines to carve the family pumpkins.  This is a ‘parent-only’ activity and should be conducted on a flat, stable surface.
  • Children can help remove the pumpkin insides using their hands or scoops. Clean up the messes as you go – slimy pumpkin insides can cause slipping hazards.
  • Use small, battery-operated lights designed for carved pumpkins in lieu of candles.  
  • Families who choose to illuminate their pumpkins with candles should use votives or tea-light candles. 
  • Candlelit pumpkins should never be left unattended and should be placed on sturdy surfaces, away from flammable objects.

 Costumes

Children should let their imaginations go – this is the ultimate creative activity!  Resist ‘buying’ a boxed costume for your children (and don’t be afraid that you’ll have to roll out grandma’s sewing machine). In order to make costumes safe, consider the following:

  • Costumes, masks, beards, wigs and other accessories should be flame resistant.
    • Masks may obstruct vision and could restrict breathing. Consider applying face paint or cosmetics instead.
    • Ensure masks fit securely and have eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.
    • Avoid hats that could slide over children’s eyes.
    • Knives, swords or similar costume accessories should not be sharp or rigid; rather they should be made of soft, flexible materials.
  • Avoid loose, baggy or long costumes to prevent tripping.
  • Children should wear sturdy, fitted footwear – oversized shoes and mother’s high heels are not ideal for safe walking.
  • Trim costumes and trick-or-treat bags with reflective tape to make them visible to motorists.

 Treats!

Before the ‘treats,’ plan an easy and filling dinner.  Pasta with veggies or macaroni and cheese with a salad will fill tummies before the evening takes off. 

 You’ll remember this one, “Do not eat any candy until you bring it home and we have thoroughly inspected it.”  Times haven’t changed much – same credo for your children! 

  • All treats should be carefully examined by adults for evidence of tampering. Any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items should be discarded.

 Interested in making the evening more memorable and less scrutinized for the children in your neighborhood?  Be a role model:

  • Avoid distributing treats considered choking hazards (e.g., gum, peanuts, hard candies and small toys).
  • Non-food giveaways such as coloring books, notepads, stickers, crayons and toothbrushes are all good ‘candy’ alternatives.

 Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-Treating is a two-way street.  Neighbors are responsible for each others’ children and parents are responsible for their own children.

 Your Children’s Safety:

  • Young children should always be accompanied by parents or other responsible adults.
  • All children and escorts should carry flashlights with fresh batteries.
  • Only homes with outside lights ‘on’ should be visited.
  • If you allow older children to go trick-or-treating with a group of friends, discuss safety precautions and agree upon a specific time when they should return home.
  • Remind children to stay on sidewalks and not to cross through yards or between parked cars, to only approach well-lit homes and to never enter a home or car for a treat. 

Your Neighborhood’s Safety:

  • Prepare your home to receive trick-or-treaters.  Clear your lawn, sidewalk, steps and porch of obstacles or potential tripping hazards.
  • Sweep wet leaves away from stairs and walkways to prevent slipping.
  • Candlelit pumpkins should be kept away from areas where costumes could brush against flames.
  • Pets should be restrained to keep children from being jumped upon or bitten.  

After-Party

Host a post-‘treating’ event at your home.  Invite neighbors (parents and children) and serve hot chocolate and dessert.  This is a wonderful opportunity to socialize and build memories!

Sleep

Children’s sleep issues are among the more challenging developmental stages for parents to master.  But biology is on the parents’ side in this one, because sleep patterns mature over time just like other developmental skills.

Polls tell us that one-third of American children and their parents sleep together some or most of the time before children start school. Co-sleeping varies hugely by culture and ethnicity. So think about what you want to do, and discuss the pros and cons with your pediatrician.

  • Make sure your crib is safe (locking rails), that your older child’s ‘big bed’ has side rails, and if you are co-sleeping, that there is plenty of room.
  • The human brain is active during sleep, but the deepest sleep is typically at the beginning of the night.  Babies spend more time than older children in stimulating REM sleep, with eye movements and irregular breathing. Don’t worry about all that action in your child’s body – it too is growth.
  • Start them young – do not ignore the importance of naps, watch for the yawn, and start bedtime early in the evening.
  • The transition from crib to bed is also a time of sleep pattern changes, but most kids want it to work. 
  • To instill good sleep habits remember that consistency matters so much:
    • Bath Time
    • Goodnights
    • Tuck and Talk Bedtime Story
    • Lullabye (yours are best)
    • Goodnights

This all sounds well and good, but it is a rare family that hasn’t had to handle some sleep trouble along the way.  If your family is trying to re-establish a lapsed routine, stay calm and reassuring.  We almost all need more sleep than we get, and it is a tremendous gift to our children to teach them how to sleep well.

Back to School Prep

Parents can help make the “back to school” transition much smoother for their child if they prepare in advance. Try to add activities or planned outings to your child’s day. This structure helps prepare them to be on a schedule when they return to the classroom. If the child will be going to a new school, parents may want to schedule a visit with their child before the first day. Consider taking your child on a fun shopping trip where they can help pick out their clothes, lunchbox and supplies. 

Ensuring your child has adequate sleep and proper nutrition is very important. Your child will do their best if they get to sleep early and eat a healthy breakfast each day before school. A daily diet of junk food is not compatible with learning. It can cause listlessness and hyperactivity which can impair a child’s ability to learn. Skipping breakfast especially is a detriment to a child’s education. 

Adjust your child’s sleep schedule a few weeks in advance to help avoid struggling to get them out of bed for school. Set up a consistent daily routine so that your child wakes up and goes to sleep at the same times each day. If you have not created one already, start a bedtime routine, including bathing, selecting clothes for the next day, cuddling together for a bedtime story and a kiss goodnight. Begin a regular morning routine that includes a healthy breakfast, packing a nutritious lunch, grooming and getting dressed for the day.

Gardening Adventures with Your Children

If you want your child to grow up to be a gardener, it’s important to remember to share gardening experiences with them throughout their childhood. These include frequent, pleasurable occurrences, designs that include messy, colorful plots and great memories of working together in the garden. Each child’s capabilities and attention span will vary so it’s important to adjust your expectations. The goal is to teach your children to respect and enjoy gardening as well as experience a feeling of “I did it myself” at harvest time.

The Composting Council of Canada developed the following good reasons to foster a lifelong love of gardening in children.

  1. Health:  Growing your own vegetables makes it easier to get enough servings each day.
  2. Exercise: Digging, turning, spreading compost, mulching, hoeing, excavating rocks – all burn calories, help build muscles and strengthen hearts and lungs.
  3. Save Money: Even a small vegetable patch can reduce your expenses.
  4. Education:  Gardening is terrific for providing hands-on lessons in botany, zoology, weather, hydrology, as well as cycles of life, death and physical decay.
  5. Waste Reduction and Recycling: Compost piles transform kitchen scraps, leaves and yard waste into rich soil amendments. Gardeners can reuse of all kinds of cans, cartoons, meat trays and more.
  6. Stress Relief: Planting seeds and tending plants can restore balance and perspective.
  7. Togetherness: Use vegetables grown together to make delicious meals together and donate abundance to people who need it.
  8. Helps Improve Reading and Math Skills:  Children can make plant markers, read seed packets and even help pay for nursery plants.
  9. Memory Building: Provides great memories for the years to come.
  10. Satisfaction: The more time you spend with your children in the garden, the more they will feel the garden is truly theirs and the more eager they will be to take care of it.

READY – SET – GROW!

Children are fascinated by nature and the simple pleasures of smelling flowers, picking vegetables and studying insects. Gardening provides family fun, teaches patience and responsibility and builds self-esteem.

Pique your child’s curiosity:

  • Plant things your children like to eat – such as veggies they like on a pizza or in a salad or create your own salsa using tomatoes you’ve grown.
  • Make a scarecrow to deter pests or plant daisies and petunias to attract butterflies.

Be sure to plan special time for gardening, but keep sessions brief. Frequent activity changes, such as planting, watering, mulching, weeding and harvesting will help keep children engaged. Allow plenty of time for catching toads, gathering bouquets of dandelions and planting the seeds from yesterday’s snack of fresh watermelon.

Grandparents

Grandparents

Love and time…need we say more?  How about wise historian, mentor, confidant, elder, counselor, spiritual guide, financier, playmate or parental antidote?  These are all roles that grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren.  And grandparents are a growing force!  The number and percentage of the population that grandparents account for has grown dramatically in the last 15 years – from 58 million to 78 million. 

Here are a few ways that you can help foster a healthy relationship between your parents and your children:

  • When planning a visit, talk about how you can help and what you should bring to help things go smoothly.  Discuss recent routines and help your parents childproof their house – more to keep your child safe than to protect the crystal. This communication
    provokes less defensiveness in grandparents, and helps them be a part of the solution from the start.
  • Relax some rules, but don’t compromise your core values. For instance, sweets seem to be a generational prerogative, but television monitoring should continue according to your child’s habits and your beliefs.
  • Children and grandparents are so close because they share something in common – you!  They can share stories, secrets, etc. that allow children the experience of close relationships with a loving family member who is not wholly responsible for their future happiness, homework or well being.
  • Spoiling is not a helpful approach to grandparenting and most of them know it.  Positive expectant attention is best.  Interestingly, today’s grandparents are so busy, I think this is less of a problem these days.
  • Enjoy the relationship your children are developing with your parents. 

When misunderstandings or problems occur (and they are bound to), it’s better to figure out a way to talk about them than to avoid each other. That is too steep a price for your children. We all want this relationship to work because the benefits are forever.

Multilingual Learners

Students at The Goddard School® Ballantyne located in Charlotte, NC, benefit from early exposure to sign language provided for children ages Infant to Pre K. 

The sign language program, developed by Time to Sign, Inc., introduces children to American Sign Language (ASL), a manual form of communication where sign mimics experiences with ideas or objects.  Children, even infants, learn to sign through the use of songs, games, stories and play. 

  • Research indicates that a bilingual approach with hearing children enhances literacy skills and activates brain growth and development.
  • Sign helps children communicate, understand, acquire, spell, speak and read words more effectively.
  • Sign has been shown to reduce conflict, facilitate an understanding of human emotions, and increase children’s confidence and self-esteem.
  • Sign allows babies to communicate their pre-verbal wants and needs.

Kids Get Active!

Goddard Schools Nationwide Kicks Off the “Get Active” Initiative to Keep Youngsters Moving 

Michelle Obama recently announced “Let’s Move,” a national campaign to combat childhood obesity through fitness and nutrition programs. Every day inside and outside the classroom, 360- plus Goddard Schools nationwide take great strides to get preschoolers, toddlers and infants up and moving. 

Placing children on the right path to living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential, and that is why Goddard, the country’s leading childcare franchise company, initiated its “Get Active” campaign. From yoga to dance, dramatic play to music and movement, Goddard has been at the forefront of promoting children’s health by encouraging kids to get active throughout the day.

To encourage children to “Get Active,” education experts at Goddard offer some simple and helpful ideas that you can do at home with your young child:

1. Take It Outside – Limit “screen time” and encourage your child to go outside and PLAY. Have a relay race, set up an obstacle course or bring back one of your favorite childhood pastimes like hopscotch or jump rope. 

2. It’s In Your Nature – Take your child on a nature walk. Use this great opportunity to talk to your child about plants and animals you see while getting fresh air and exercise.

3. Get Dramatic – When you’re transitioning a child from one activity to another – like play time to dinner time – ask them to move like their favorite animal. Hop like a kangaroo, slither like a snake or waddle like a duck.

4. Be a Good Sport – Preschool age children love to learn the basic rules of popular sports and games. Take this opportunity to talk about sportsmanship.

5. Be Free – Remember free play? Let go of some structure, and encourage your children to use their imaginations in their indoor and outdoor play.

6. Stretch It Out – Preschoolers love basic yoga moves. Take a few minutes each day to stretch with your little one.

7. Put Some Movement In Your Music – When you sing songs or listen to music with young children, encourage them to dance with scarves, make up movements to go with the lyrics or just DANCE and move their bodies to the music.

Weather Art Activity

Weather Window  

The Goddard School® Ballantyne located in Charlotte, NC recommends trying new activities with your child!

 Materials:

Clear dishwashing liquid

Pre-mixed tempera paints in a variety of colors

Aluminum foil muffin pan

Paint brushes

*Children should have adult supervision throughout this activity.

Directions:

  1. An adult should mix about 1 Tbsp. of dishwashing liquid with 1/2 Tbsp. of paint. The mixture should have a creamy consistency, like house paint.
  2. Pour various paint colors into the wells of a muffin pan to create a pallet.
  3. Children can paint ‘sunny day’ scenes on windows and sliding glass doors. Use a different brush for each color.

TIP: Keep paint away from windowsills and woodwork. To remove the artwork, or to fix a mistake, wipe with a moist paper towel.

How Do They Measure Up?

At The Goddard School®Ballantyne, located in Charlotte, NC, we understand that selecting your child’s preschool may be one of your most important decisions.  That is why we have developed a helpful checklist.  Although you can’t measure everything in ten simple questions, we think you’ll agree that Goddard is raising the standard. 

  1. Children are treated with respect in an atmosphere that nurtures their independence and self confidence.  
  2. Fitness, foreign language, music appreciation, nutrition, sign language, and/or manners are incorporated into the program.  
  3. An Education Director and School Owner are on-site to provide dependable staff management and open communication with parents.   
  4. A Daily Activity Report is prepared for each child and sent home with parents every day.  
  5. Each classroom offers a multi-cultural and developmentally appropriate environment.  
  6. Goddard teachers have access to professional development and continuing education credit authorized by IACET. 
  7. Teachers are CPR and First Aid certified.  
  8. Detailed Corporate Quality Assurance Reviews are conducted semi-annually in addition to state license inspection.  
  9. Corporate Developmental Guidelines provide the foundation for individualized lesson plans which are brought to life in fun and imaginative ways.
